The Poetics of Form and the Politics of Identity in Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation (Ubisoft, 2012) est un jeu d’aventure et d’infiltration en monde ouvert portant sur l’esclavage. Cette fiction historique à la troisième personne comporte un rare exemple de personnage féminin noir et révolutionnaire qui se trouve aussi à être la première héroïne de la populaire franchise. En s’appuyant sur une approche intersectionnelle s’inscrivant dans la tradition des visual/cultural studies, l’auteure développe une analyse du jeu en trois temps. Dans un premier temps, elle considère le contexte culturel dans lequel le personnage est introduit. Ensuite, elle déconstruit l’esthétique du jeu en dévoilant sa poétique de la forme. Finalement, elle analyse le personnage principal, Aveline de Grandpré, et ses différentes personas afin de mieux comprendre les liens entre le contenu culturel et les mécaniques de jeu.
