Abstract

This article focuses on the media of video games and addresses the issue of its transnational circulation and reinterpretation while paying special attention to the ways in which language is negotiated. Through the study of fan localization of the specific genre of the visual novel, we will come to understand that what is really at stake in the phenomenon of transnational circulation of cultural products is not the importance of understanding the objects according to the “correct” interpretation coming from the objects’ country of origin. Rather, by using Dilip P. Gaonkar and Elizabeth A. Povinelli’s concept of transfiguration as well as Henry Jenkins’ notion of textual poaching, this article supports the idea that the transnational.
