Abstract

This research-creation explores the role of metaphor in video game environment design, using the work of Donald Schön as a theoretical framework and focusing on concept art. Using the concrete example of the development of a village for a tribe of fictional aquatic humanoids, the analysis focuses on how metaphors emerge, evolve, and are used creatively in the design process. The article details the various stages of the creative process, highlighting the importance of conceptual clusters in idea generation. It also highlights the influence of the designer's individual repertoire. In addition, it shows how metaphors, once identified, can be manipulated and corrected to better suit the situation. Changes in initial metaphors often lead to significant evolutions in the creation of environments, illustrating Schön's concept of generative metaphor.
